How do I know if my child needs a speech and language therapist?

If you have any concerns about your child's speech, language, communication or feeding, it's always worth seeking an assessment. You don't need to wait until a problem is severe — early support is often the most effective. Common signs to look out for include: not saying first words by 12–15 months, not combining two words by age 2, speech that is difficult to understand at age 3 or older, difficulty following simple instructions, or significant struggles at mealtimes. If in doubt, get in touch and we can have an informal chat about whether an assessment would be helpful.

How often will my child need sessions?

Following an initial assessment we will be able to let you know how many sessions we think your child may benefit from. We work collaboratively with parents/ carers on this on a case by case basis.

Where will my child be seen?

Sessions can take place at your home, your child's nursery or school, or online — depending on the service and what works best for your family. Face to face sessions are available across Berkshire including Windsor, Ascot, Bracknell, Maidenhead, Reading, Slough, Egham and surrounding areas.

What age do you work with?

We work with children from birth up to 10 years old across all of our services — weaning, feeding, speech, language and communication.

How long does an assessment take?

This varies depending on the service. Most assessments last between 60 and 90 minutes. You'll also be asked to complete a pre-assessment questionnaire before the appointment so Chelsea can prepare and make the most of your time together.

What happens after an assessment?

Following your assessment, you will receive either a written report or a summary of findings (depending on the package you choose), along with targets and recommendations. Chelsea will discuss next steps with you — whether that's a programme of therapy sessions, strategies to use at home, or onward referral if appropriate.

What is the SOS Approach to Feeding?

The SOS (Sequential Oral Sensory) Approach to Feeding is a specialist, evidence-based programme for children with feeding difficulties. It uses a play-based, sensory approach to help children gradually become more comfortable with a wider range of foods, without pressure. Chelsea is trained in the SOS approach and uses it as part of her fussy eating and feeding therapy.

Do you offer a free consultation?

We are happy to have a brief informal chat to help you decide whether our services are the right fit for your child. Please get in touch via the contact page and we can arrange a time to speak.

Do I need a referral from my GP?

No, you do not need a referral form your GP to access services.

If intervention is appropriate we will discuss sharing information with other professionals further.

Can I pay through insurance?

Unfortunately, we do not currently accept private health insurance.

My child also sees other professionals- will you work together?

It is really important for us to link with other professionals involved with your child so we can work collaboratively together. With your permission we will liaise and share information with other professionals involved in your child's care.

How do I book?

You can get in touch via our contact page or by emailing chelsea@eatchatplay.com. Chelsea will get back to you to discuss your needs and arrange an appointment.
